Naked underneath…

With sunshine (hurrah!) comes the desire to perhaps wear lighter coloured tops – but what to wear underneath? Sometimes a flash of a bra strap, interesting bra back detail can be alluring and perhaps even part of your look… other times, perhaps more discretion is required.

But often ‘nude’ bras can be the most unattractive, drab looking and, well, just a bit ‘meh’ like the bra had got caught up in the wrong wash. Permanently.

Even though designing lingerie is my day job it shouldn’t surprise me and yet it does, in just how utilitarian so many are. I know they are often a ‘solution’ type garment wanted for their simplicity, but… at times though, a little bit of prettiness wouldn’t go a miss surely?

So here’s a look at various ‘nude’ bras out there on the market, for when you want your white and light tops to stay the feature, and not necessarily the bra being worn underneath to show. (Did you realise, white bras under white or light tops can draw more attention than a nude or even pale pink bra…?)

For darker skin tones – there doesn’t seem to be so much choice… I know in the past different brands and stores have tried to introduce varying ‘nude’ colourways to offer a more diverse range; sadly these can often end up as part of a marketing campaign to then quietly disappear. (This is where the power and ability to sell online comes to the fore; it’s easier – read; cheaper – to hold things in a warehouse rather than take up valuable floor space, even so…)

Dorina – offers Lana lace – nude colours for more than just one skin tone and is available from a host of retailers online. And some boutiques + House of Frasers’.

H&M have this micro fibre smooth t-shirt bra with light padding – sizes 32A – 38F – some of the larger sizes have sold out online, but could well still be available in store. Don’t necessarily be put off by the price on larger sizes in thinking that the fit will be rubbish… stores just as H&M order such vast quantities – they can’t afford for the fit to be bad, and therefore styles not sell. Sometimes, yes you do get what you pay for… other times one can be pleasantly surprised.

More refined simplicity – this is from a brand I’ve got to know through the power of Instagram – they have beautiful styles… I’ve shown the white version here as the nude shade image didn’t sell it as much to me, and looked a bit well, meh. Sizes available 34B – 38DD.

Eva Pure Shape uw bra £36

Finally this gorgeous bralette from Wacoal… love this. Simple yet pretty.

Wacoal bralette £26

I’ve been in the lingerie industry for about 400 years – it still excites me, I still love the fact we’re still looking for new ideas and new solutions to be supported and comfortable.

The next industry mission is to make it sustainable… now that’s a whole other conversation that’s brewing. How do you feel about wearing lingerie made from recycled plastic bottles? Mind blowing – and yet completely brilliant; I’m on it!
