My default setting is to wear black. I know and I’ve heard, other colours are available – but somehow black makes me feel more secure… and more me.
There are probably many things to analyse about my desire to wear black over other colours (I’m partial also, when pushed, to navy sometimes as well you know), is it wanting to hide, to not shout about my presence – or more, let me talk, not my clothes? It is also in truth that I never really got over my flirtation with Goth-dem and wearing black as a teenager. But then… well, black is flattering, it’s sleek, and it’s also (sometimes) a bit rock and roll. It’s also a good back drop to other colours, should one want to introduce them.
But ENOUGH about that, let’s get on with the show. Black in summer is rather fabulous because there is so much colour around, it sort of sets itself apart. So here are some ways to stun, both yourself and anyone you choose too…
I have a thing about puff sleeved things. I have no need for them. No where to wear such items and yet… they balance out proportions, square shoulders etc. So I can’t help it, they are just a yes.
Hush Andino V-neck Top £40, was £59

More puff. Glorious.
H&M Puff-sleeved Blouse £12.99

Keeping with the sleeve action. So beautiful.
& Other Stories Ruffled A-line Embroidery Blouse £55

Sleeve-age ruffles in jumpsuit form. I mean….
Gap Eyelet Ruffle Sleeve Jumpsuit in Poplin £59.95

Off the shoulder… this could be a summer staple and come out year after year (with the right & comfy strapless bra). I’ll also mention – statement earrings.
H&M Linen Blouse £19.99

I’ve not worn shorts since about 1957, but if I did, and wanted a smarter pair, I’d go for these. (The top is beautiful in it’s simplicity as well, just saying).
& Other Stories Mulberry Silk Shorts £69

I saw these trousers and could not look away. They are all 1990’s All Saints and MC Hammer vibes in one. LOVE (particularly with the sharp heel.)
French Connection Colet Drape Parachute trousers £80

Keeping with volume… I love the easy simplicity of this black dress… possibly a cycling short type brief underneath required for counter balancing any sudden gust of wind/preserving modesty… (also, tights and boots come winter?)
H&M A-line Dress £17.99

Smarter. Timeless. Stunning.
& Other Stories Voluminous Wrap Midi Dress £120

I’m completely in love with Cos this season, the elegance and simplicity of their clothes, every detail is considered and refined. The back of this dress has gentle pleats and gathers and flattering slightly dipped hem.
Cos Mulberry silk dress £89

Finally, how to make an exit. The simplest and most refined of dresses from the front, and then ties that can be tied like as shown below, or left open. Yes please, on every level.
Cos Organic Cotton Aline reverse tie dress £69

Right, I’m off to deliver some chocolates (I wish) like the Milk Tray (WO)man.
